The Proteans

Statement

This series developed out a need to reorganize a growing collection of figure drawings from the model.  I have recycled figure works into abstracted portraits of strange, displaced individuals surrounded by blankness. These works were started from line drawings torn out of their context, literally.  Then collaged onto gessoed, stark white canvases, and reworked with bits and pieces of mixed media, multicoloured and textured surfaces on paper. 

I’m interested in exploring extreme contrasts.  It is paint interrupting the sanctity of drawing and the exciting process of transformation that transpires that keeps the series fresh and exhilarating for me.
